Summer is here and there’s more to getting your pool summer ready than replacing the filter and adding new chemicals. As the warmer weather has well and truly arrived along with the official beginning of summer it’s a good time to assess the safety of your pool area including your pool fencing. This will also make sure your pool complies with Queensland pool fencing laws.

• Is the fence a minimum 1.2 metres in height?
• Do gates open outwards i.e. away from the pool enclosure?
• Does the gate automatically swing shut and with the latch completely closed?
• Is the gap between the fence and the ground less than 100mm?
• Are there gaps between fence columns, bars or posts greater than 100mm?
• Are there horizontal footholds wide enough to give leverage over the fence?
• Are there objects like rocks, branches, tree stumps or pot plants surrounding the pool fence which could act as a means to climb over the fence?
• Is the gate latch more than 1.5 metres above the ground?
• Are there doors or windows that could allow a child to get from the house directly to the pool area?
• Is the top of your fence at least 900mm above any horizontal fence rails?
OTHER POOL SAFETY REMINDERS
It’s not enough to have your pool fence at the right specifications. They also must remain in good condition. This means if posts are missing, wood has rotted or gates are not self closing or jam, it is the pool owner’s responsibility to have these repaired otherwise they risk facing heavy penalties.
