fences

At Fence Corp we take pride in building fences in Brisbane which are not only functional but also look great. In our garden fencing range, we have a great variety of different designs and styles to choose from, and a number of decorative spears to add elegance and character. When it comes to personalising your fence, it doesn’t have to stop there, since there are many climbing plants that can blend seamlessly with perimeter fencing. Adding plants to your garden fence will not only look great, but also increase privacy at the same time.

Bougainvillea

This low maintenance garden favourite is available in a range of striking colours and is an ideal to cover fences. While the plant can be thorny, bougainvillea plants are easy to grow in warmer subtropical climates like that in south-east Queensland.

Jasmine

Giving off a luscious aroma, jasmine is a hardy evergreen climbing plant that comes in a number of varieties, including white star jasmine and Madagascar jasmine. Jasmine grows best in areas that are semi shaded but also receive periodic sun.

Wisteria

Wisteria comes is several forms including white, pink and purple with an attractive foliage and perfume, wisteria is a deciduous plant that likes full sun. Wisteria in the beginning stage will need training including regular tending to promote growth in the best way.

Honeysuckle

Grows well in full shade or sun and with established plants fairly drought tolerant and able to grow in most soil types, this is one of the best low maintenance climbing plants. For use with fences or shaded pergolas, Honeysuckle can add to the privacy of your fence and also yields attractive flowers in the process.

Climbing Ivy

Ivy is a very gentle climber, and also very adaptable to different environments. The do however need regular pruning and maintenance to ensure they are controlled since they are fast growing and can overgrow an area if not maintained.

Things to remember about climbing plants and fences:

  • All climbing plants need some training especially when first planted. To train them use light garden twine or cotton and use heavier restraining materials to restrain the plant as it becomes larger and more established.
  • Most climbing plants will eventually add extra height to your fence unless regularly pruned.
  • Some climbing plants also add significant weight to your fence, so make sure your fence has been securely installed before planting
  • When planting, make sure you leave enough space between the plant and the base of the fence since the root system will receive adequate rainfall.

Garden fences provide a significant opportunity to the homeowner to incorporate their garden and fencing together, and climbing plants a great way to create a new ‘green’ fence that adds character and a personal touch to your outdoor area.
