If you are considering building a balcony or deck more than 1 metre from the ground here in Brisbane, it is also a legal requirement that balustrades are installed to protect people from falling. It is also the responsibility of those with existing balustrades to make sure that they are well maintained and free from deterioration.

Here at Fence Corp, we offer attractive glass and aluminium balustrades for decks and balconies, patios and verandas. Not only will they meet strict Queensland building code requirements, but they also look great and can be used as a design feature in both traditional and contemporary homes. We explain the requirements of installing and maintaining balustrades in Queensland below.
INSTALLING BALUSTRADES:

When is a balustrade required?

Balustrades are required for decks, balconies and verandas and patios where people could fall one metre or more to the ground. In other words, if there is a one metre or more drop to the ground below a balustrade is needed.

Do retaining walls need balustrades?

Sloped properties with retaining walls built on the land do not require balustrades unless they are associated with a path or travel between buildings. However, it is a good idea to install balustrading around retaining walls in backyards if there is a risk of young children falling.

Depending on the height of the deck, balcony or veranda, a balustrade cannot have greater than 12.5 mm cent between openings between columns to avoid small children or pets falling through.

For decks and balconies that are more than four metres high, there are also not permitted to be any climbable elements in the design. E.g. Horizontal beams.

All Balustrades must also be designed with strength and durability in mind. This means they can withstand someone leaning on them and strong winds.

MAINTAINING YOUR BALUSTRADES

At Fence Corp we build our balustrades to last, but homeowners should also not ignore the maintenance requirements of their balustrades. It’s important to keep glass balustrades free from significant chips or cracks and have them replaced if this is the case.

Anchor points where the balustrade is fixed to the flooring should also be regularly inspected to make sure they are free from rust. The handrail or bannister should also be checked to ensure there is no movement and is secured adequately.

If your balustrades do not comply with these safety or maintenance requirements, it could be an accident waiting to happen. All the work Fence Corp complete with fencing and balustrades complies with strict building code specifications and the highest level of safety.
